WELCOME TO KINETON HIGH SCHOOL

World Book Day 2017

What a wonderful World Book Day we had at Kineton High.   Staff and students dressed up as fictional Witches, Wizards and Mythical Creatures and we had a whole host of reading related activities and events running throughout the day.

In Period 1 Year 7 participated in a celebration of reading in the hall with their English teachers. Each class performed a sketch on stage promoting reading – we loved the ‘Take Me Out’ piece promoting reading books from the Library by Ms Hughes’ group.

Then in Period 2 Years 7 & 8 had a visit from guest author Mark Walden. Mark is the author of the HIVE series –  a series of young adult fiction novels H.I.V.E., the Higher Institute of Villainous Education, is a top secret school hidden inside a volcano that trains children to become criminal masterminds.  Mark spoke about writing and how he finds villains so much more exciting than heroes!

In Period 4 and 5 Years 9 & 10 had an amazing session with guest spoken word artist Solomon O.B rapper, poet and musician  and 2016 Hammer & Tongue National Poetry Slam Champion.  Solomon performed for the students and spoke about his life and experiences growing up.

During the morning we had teams of Year 5 students from our partner primaries in school to participate in a fantastic Book Quiz.  Congratulations to the winners Xanthe, Yazmin, Scarlett and Kate from Cropredy Primary School.

At lunchtime we had Wizard Wicks reading from ‘A Series of Unfortunate Events’ by Lemony Snicket in the LRC and the Sixth Form had organised our own take on the popular wizarding sport of Quidditch with matches running in the Sports Hall.20170309_132035 (Large)

There was also an interactive Book for students to explore, courtesy of DT Technician Tim.

We even had a spells poetry competition – congratulations to Anabel Burton from Hoy/NH on her winning poem Death Candy.

Particular thanks to Mrs Dewhurst who brought in a stunning 3 tier cake to help us celebrate World Book Day.

World Book Day has been a great celebration of reading (an important activity that is proven to help student attainment). Many thanks to all the students and staff for participating so enthusiastically – we have raised money for charity and had a lot of fun at the same time.
